Just after school was out, Carrie came down for a few days with the kids. She arrived on Tuesday and we convinced her (wooing her with the zoo) to stay until Thursday. It was so fun having such a busy household for a few days. On Friday morning, my kids woke up and didn't know what to do with peace and quiet and no friends to play with! I always love spending time with Carrie and her kids and this was no exception!

Apparently when it comes to meal time, I am just the meanest mom around. All because when Sydney refused to eat her rotini noodles I still made her keep the plate on her tray. The nerve of some moms!!

Note the progression---and remember, these dramatics were because I would not remove the plate...not due to forced consumption of something like broccoli, peas, or meat BUT noodles and sauce (of which she'd happily already taken a few bites before changing her mind)!!

We squeezed in another quick zoo trip with Lisa Karavas and cutie Carter in June. It was great (and my mom and Harrison tagged along to give Heather a little one on one time with RG). I hardly took any pics but a few good ones at the petting zoo....

So we signed up Gavin for a t-ball class and it's been....interesting. Let's just say, I don't know that t-ball is Gavin's natural gift. :) So far he does like it and Chad or I have been helping him along while out there. He likes to play and takes his turn when hitting, catching etc but he's less than attentive when it isn't his turn. He's often standing in the field pointing out bugs, playing in the grass, staring into space or turned the wrong direction. I've told my parents I have another "Kyle" on my hands....all too interested in the world around him than to pay any attention to the task at hand: t-ball. But he looks adorable...we just need ALOT OF PRACTICE. :)

School's out for the summer!!!! That means we can officially let the fun begin--pools, splash parks, picnics, zoo trips, beaches and more. We started off our summer with the first trip to the splash park on a VERY warm June day with Amanda, Lisa and the kids!

Gavin's Summer Plans

In regards to therapy that is...

1 - We added PT once a week. We're hoping to gain some core strength this summer. We'll be working on balance issues, coordination and all kinds of fun stuff. Gavin will be with Miss Jen after he sees Tracy on Wednesdays. Jen says he's "on the cusp" of needing it. He isn't technically really delayed but she does see weakness that with improvement will help him with posture and all of that as it relates to speech.

2 - Listening program. This is added by Nikki his OT. It is a 3 month long listening program that will have Gavin listening to special modulated musice two times a day for 30 minutes. So far, he doesn't mind it and it doesn't seem to interfere with whatever he is doing. By the end of the 3 months, we are hoping to see a change in focus, attention and listening skills. Here's to hoping!

Prima Donna

Sydney. She is such a prima donna. The more frills the better for this girl. The other day she found this tutu in her closet and INSISTED it go on immediately.

She is such a poser.

And how quickly she goes from 0 to 60 when she can get it off as easily as it went on.

Welcome Reagan Grace!!

On Monday, June 6, my brother and sister-in-law welcomed their second baby Reagan Grace! She's beautiful (of course) and such a little peanut! We were so excited to go see her and spend a little cuddle time together. After they all came home from the hospital, Gavin and Sydney were able to go meet their new cousin as well! So excited Sydney has a little girl playmate for a cousin! I can only imagine the future.....

18 Months

Here is a couple of quick stats of my girl at 18 months:

34 3/4 inches tall
32 lbs.

Over 100th percentile -- and is the size of an average 3 year old. Awesome.

Here are the best terms to describe Sydney these days

1 - Chatty. This girl's got words. Chad and I are constantly amazed at what we DON'T teach her and she just picks up. I'm not saying she's advanced but she talks alot and it is not a struggle for her. Phew and Yay! (lots of words, two word phrases, etc.)

2 - Defiant. Tell her not to do something. She does it. Tell her to stop something. She continues. She doesn't break a stride. She does it with attitude. She taunts you with it. ie: Sydney don't throw your food on the ground (in angry mom voice). She does. You threaten spankings, smack her hand and continue to use angry mom voice. She then holds her food over the side of her tray, staring at you, lingering ....until she drops it. The girl is defiant.

3 - Ham/Poser/Cheeseball. She loves to strike a pose and scrunch up her nose and face and say "cheese!" any time there is a camera, pretend camera or phone around. Truly, it cracks me up every time.

4 - She's a big girl and a lump. She does not help you when you hold her. She is in 2T clothing but rapidly approaching 3T.

5 - Tantrums. Oh she loves to throw a good trantrum...at home, in the car, at Target. She really loves to throw herself on the ground and scoot around on her back or belly while kicking her legs and screaming at the top of her lungs. She loves this activity. Me--not so much.

6 - Other stuff - she loves to "jump" even though she can't get off the ground. Loves to dance like crazy. And loves to use her loyalties against Mom or Dad - aka, Mom yelled at me, so she then cries for Daddy and tries to find him or vice versa. How do they learn that so quick?

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend we headed to the zoo with my family. It started off great--empty, mild temps--unfortunately we soon found ourselves in a downpour. Needless to say our zoo trip ended earlier than expected with lunch at Mom & Dads. At least it didn't stop us from having fun while we were there!

Happy May Birthdays!!

On the Yonker side of the family we have three birthdays all within the end of May: yours truly on May 26 and both my brother Chad and nephew Harrison on May 28. Its our family tradition that around birthday time we all go out for dinner. This year we thought we'd mix it up and do dinner at our house -- its more fun for the kids and gives us more time just to hang out. Chad and I called our "meat guy" and grilled up quite a feast! It was a great night.

First Zoo Trip of the Season

As soon as the weather gets remotely nice around here we try to get to the zoo. This weekend in May is no exception. After a long winter zoo hiatus we were happy to be back! Amanda, Lisa and I met up on a Friday and the kids loved it of course. Can't wait for many more similar excursions this summer!

Familiar Faces

Our trip was amazing. I LOVED spending time with my husband wandering the streets, exploring, learning, relaxing, eating, reconnecting....you name it. It was so rejuvenating. BUT....I missed two little faces more than you can fathom. By day 7, it was starting to take hold and by day 9, I wanted out. I loved our time but I was ready to come home. Our flight home ended up being a nightmare--lots of tears and running and almost missed flights. The airline had cancelled my reservation which sent us into a tailspin through two airports trying to get home. I was beyond distraught with the idea we weren't making it home. Somehow (grace of God) we made it onto our flight home (different rows, middle seats) and at that point, I wanted nothing more than to see my babies.

Of course, we came home bearing gifts....never have two little cuties looked so cute to me.

Pompeii & Naples (Day 9-10)

Saturday...our last full day in Italy we took a car back to Naples where we'd be staying for the night. On the way we had a 2 hour pit stop in Pompeii. A-mazing! We could have spent so much more time there as it is truly fascinating. As for Naples...we could have done without.....

Last Day in Positano (Day 8)

Our final day in Positano we decided to really take a day to relax...we had a beautiful pool in our building that we had yet to take adavantage of and we were ready to have a day off from touring. So we lazed around in the morning, went shopping in Positano in the afternoon and had one of our most fun nights at Il Mediterraneo that night for dinner. We'd be saying goodbye to beautiful Positano in the morning.

Capri (Day 7)

The next day we took a boat tour that took us to Capri and around the island. Everyone talks about Capri (pronounced "KAH-pree") so of course we were anxious to check it out for ourselves. It was pretty...but jammed. People everywhere. I have to say, the glamour of Capri was definitely lost among the masses of people crowding the streets. However...we had a beautiful sunny day and a very relaxing boat ride to enjoy.

Upon arriving to Capri we went directly up to the Anacapri area where there was a single person chairlift taking you up to the highest point of the island. Not that I loved it by any means but Chad was NOT a fan.

We stopped at the blue grotto...an amazingly beautiful natural fomation. We were the only ones on our boat that went---probably b/c it was so expensive. However, I have to admit, I've never seen anything like it in my life. We got into a tiny boat with an Italian man smoking a cigarette and terrible B.O.

Do you see that very tiny hole/opening on the left of those metal rails, yeah, that is where we went in. We had to lay down (with said B.O. smelling Italian laying pretty much on top of me) to get in there.

This is what we saw. So amazing and beautiful!

To get the real experience, look at this picture, get the smell of body odor in your head and hear LOUD Italian singing from the canoe man right in your ear, giggle with your husband. Yep, that's about right.

Beautiful, romantic dinner in a restaurant literally was perched out over the ocean. However, b/c of our boat ride all day and the sound of the waves coming in....I felt seasick for most of dinner--like I was rocking. It was unfortunate.

Amalfi & Ravello (Day 6)

Our next day we took a ferry over one town to Amalfi. We explored the city and then took a cab up to Ravello. Ravello is known for its scenic views up atop the mountains. It was so gorgeous. We walked alot, saw beautiful gardens, enjoyed lunch in a piazza, walked holding hands, laughed at our cab driver, found treasures in Amalfi and took our (breezy!) ferry ride back. It was a great day together....again.

On to Positano....(Day 5)

The next morning we were off to Positano. We took a fast train to Naples and from there we had about 1 1/2 hour drive to the coast with a driver named Franco. Franco was great but he ONLY addressed me in the car, never Chad - he loved to talk and apparently only to the woman in the car. Hilarious. Our first day in Positano we just relaxed, checked in and explored the town that was our new "home base." We soon realized we'd be in for a work out. Our driver dropped us off and said walk downward through the streets until the beach where you will find your hotel--no cars were allowed past a certain point. He gave a guy our luggage and told us it'd be there when we arrived. Thankfully the hotel he was right on both accounts!

Vatican Day/Rome (Day 4)

Day 4 again started early in the morning--we took a cab over to our pre-arranged tour of the Vatican & St. Peter's Basilica. So happy we made that choice as the lines and mobs of people were unbelievable! Had a great morning seeing beautiful art, learning perplexing stories of Catholic history and trying to dispel my conspiracy theorist husband. Took a long walk back in the afternoon....enjoyed some wine (or a little more than some) and had our favorite dinner in Rome at L' Archetto... in the Trastavere neighborhood. Dinner is always amazing when you ask the server (aka owner) at the table a question and they say..."Prego, don't you worry, I make for you"....and what comes to your table is a delicious homemade surprise.

Ancient Rome (Day 3)

Our first official day started bright and early with a subway ride to the Colosseum (for a good laugh, ask Chad about his "near-death" experience boarding public transit). Ever the one to be prepared, I had done some research (thanks to Rick Steves' Rome guidbook) and had downloaded an audio guide for most of today's attractions that compromise the ancient part of Rome. Starting with the Colosseum....

First view inside. The top would be where all the seating is. They have added a partial floor to show you where the arena floor was originally. All of the area underneath is where all the gladiators, prisoners, animals were kept....a maze like formation with all different holding cells.

Chad all "geared up"....ipod, backpack, shorts that hold all my stuff.

Amazing. Built around 80 A.D. during the height of the Roman Empire.

This stadium could hold 50,000 fans.

Piazza Venezia- in the 1930's this is where Mussolini addressed the Facist masses from one of the balconies.

Victor Emmanuel Monument - built in 1870, it is 43 feet long (the biggest equestrian statue in the world). The moustache is over 5 feet wide and a person could fit into the horse's hoof. The entire monument is 200 ft high and 500 ft wide (to put it into perspective). Carvings on the side--we needed to take a break as we climbed all 700+ stairs.

We took the elevator up to the glass top and the view were worth it!

We left on Friday, May 13 and although there were a few tears (from me)we were pretty excited to start the trip. We had a nonstop flight to Rome and we actually got exit row! Things were looking good already...we thought we were flying Delta but it turned out to be Alitalia...not so great. Flight was long, the plane was very old, uncomfortable and the service poor but we didn't care. We were on our way! When we arrived we couldn't check in and decided to start exploring and hop on a double decker bus to get a quick overview. It was terrible. So crowded, so hot and so so long. However...we were still excited and Chad was alternating between falling asleep and snapping pics...

Italy Anniversary Getaway!

Chad and I went on a 10 day trip to Italy to celebrate our 10 year anniversary! I can't believe we did it....and I can't believe it is over! We'd been planning and researching for months...booking airfare (for free!!), tours, hotels, places, etc. We decided to do a few days in Rome then head to the Amalfi coast and leave from Naples with a stop in Pompei on our way out. We set up our sitters-- Chad's parents from Friday when we left until Monday and then my parents the rest of the week. We were all set, researched, ready to go and I had such a pit in my stomach! I was suddenly so nervous about leaving the kids. I'm not going to lie, the days preceding were filled with anxiety for me. However, I was also so excited about the prospect of having time just Chad and I to explore Italy.

So....we did it and it was AMAZING. I'm telling you hands down....best trip we've done together. It was so fun to explore and sightsee together during the day and enjoy long two hour dinners at night. We were on noone's schedule but our own. We did what we want...when we wanted...as a team. We had conversations that weren't just "an exchange of information." So many days our conversations just give updates, tidbits and information about our days, kids, whereabouts, etc. In Italy we sat for hours over delicious Italian food and wine and talked and laughed and people watched.

Italy was beautiful and a perfect vacation for us. So....coming up in a post for each day I'll break it down. Great way to spend our 10 year anniversary (5 months early) and remember just exactly how much we do like to spend time together. :) So happy we went and so happy to have Chad!

Now to commence the love fest...

Mother's Day 2011

I love Mother's Day. I've said it a million times. I love a day that celebrates moms. That being said, I also love it because it's a day that really reminds how blessed I am. Being a Mom is truly the greatest earthly gift God has given me. Honestly, when I look at my kids, my heart is so full I feel like it could burst. However, there are countless days (and I seriously don't want to count) when I struggle, question and wrestle with the children God gave me....Mother's Day helps me remember exactly that....God gave them to me. He knew that as ill-equipped as I feel at times and in spite of all my inadequacies, that I would be the best Mom for them. What did I do to deserve these two amazing kids that were created in His image? How can I possibly be good enough for them? I don't know--but I love them more than life itself--and I will spend my whole life trying to be the Mom God intended and remembering to thank Him every step of the way for each of them.

Here's to being a super lucky Mom!

A Purple Party

Morgan turned 6 this year!! We went to MI to celebrate with her with special instructions from the birthday guest herself, that we were all to wear PURPLE to her very special Purple Party. Florida with Friends

We finally took another "friends trip" with the Agemas and Thomsons down to Naples but this time with our 6 kids in tow....it was a bit different experience from our non-kid days down in FL. We went for 5 days of crazy, non-stop swimming fun.

The first day we arrived was a long day -- our flight was at 6 am and the Harris household in particular was going on no sleep due to Sydney's flu episode flu the night before (see previous post). However, it didn't take long for everyone to settle right in and jump in the pool.

The week was a crazy kid fest. Days were spent soaking up sun, splashing in the water, swimming until your skin was wrinkly, catching fish, chatting and eating....the nights were spent relaxing watching Bulls/Blackhawks playoff games, eating sweets, enjoying wine and more often than not going to bed exhausted! I will admit, there was a feeling of impending doom all week as we waited for the next person to get the flu but surprisingly the only ones to fall victim were Gavin (super mild case) and Dave (pretty rough case).

We all loved hanging out and watching out kids have the absolute time of their lives together. As I always say: I love their love. And I do. So fun to watch how much they love to be together and hear their little voices each morning saying "where my friends, mom?" I hope this tradition continues for many years to come....with a few non-kid trips thrown in there for the parents from time to time too. :)

The Toothbrush, The Incident & The Flu

(Beware...this is a long story about a very very long day)

Twas the day before we left for Naples...and it was HECTIC in the house...

On Friday morning, I took a shower with the kids so we could all get clean and ready for the day. I got out first and then got Sydney out a few minutes later. I got her ready to go and then Gavin was ready to come out. As I was getting him out of the shower, I heard Sydney screaming like she was hurt. I was in my bathroom and she was in my room. I ran to her and picked her up and blood was gushing from her mouth. She was holding a non-bloody toothbrush. She would not calm down for quite some time. I cleaned up the blood and searched every cavity in her mouth to see what was bleeding. The only thing I could determine was she bit her tongue. She calmed down after 1/2 an hour but that entire time would not let me even THINK about putting her down.

Over the course of the next few hours, she perked up but then out of the blue would cry and need to be held. I gave her lunch and she hardly ate anything. I just figured after the trauma in the morning and being so tired from crying that she just needed to go to bed. I gave her Tylenol and put her down at 12:30. 45 minutes later she woke up SCREAMING. Very uncharacteristic for her. She was violently shaking and screaming like I've never heard before. I tried everything and could not calm her down. At 2:00 I called the pediatrician. I had a very hard time conversing with them as Sydney was screaming and wouldn't let me put her down at all. My pediatrician's office was super unhelpful, rude and informed me that they were closed and if I was THAT concerned I should go to an ER. Wow, thanks for your help. Starting to panic, sweating profusely and now crying I have NO idea what to do. Thankfully our friend Dar was painting in the basement so I ran downstairs to see if he could stay with Gavin who was sleeping while I went to the ER with Syd. Not a problem.

We go to an immediate care place. Sydney cries the entire way there, the entire time in the waiting room and the entire time she gets examined. The dr cannot determine what is wrong. She sees no mouth injury even though when I ask Sydney what hurts she points to her mouth. She asks me if she is just overtired, teething or getting sick. Are you kidding me?! This is not my first child and I KNOW when something is wrong. She told me to give her ibuprofen and wait a few hours but if it doesn't change to take her to a hospital ER. Because of her behavior, something is clearly wrong and they will have the ability to take head CT scans and etc. Holy crap. Now I am freaked out.

Syd and I get in the car and drive to Orland where there is a hospital facility (thankfully not attached to a huge hospital). Sydney cries the entire way there. At this point she has not stopped crying for 2.5 hours. We don't have to wait long and as we are waiting she FINALLY, FINALLY starts to perk up. She even ate a few goldfish crackers and had some water. I even got her to smile. We see a dr who looks in her mouth while a nurse held her down and LOW AND BEHOLD--THERE IT WAS!!! An open gash on the back of the throat--probably the size of a penny. It was the toothbrush...and element I informed each dr, could or could not, be a part of the story. Until that point, I had no idea. It was the toothbrush.

Feeling super relieved and with Syd perking up, I picked up dinner and went home. Meanwhile Gavin and Dar were happily playing pirates while we were gone (thank goodness for friends who are at the right place at the right time)! Sydney ate some cheese quesadillas and some yogurt for dinner. Things were looking good besides the fact we had LOTS to pack still (which I was planning on doing over nap time) and we were leaving at 4 am.

Early bedtime for the kids---quick bath for them both. Syd was out of the tub first and all ready for bed cuddled up on Chad while I finished up Gavin when I heard Chad shout. Sydney had just projectile vomited all over him, the chair, herself, the floor. Disgusting. Back in the tub. Trying to be optimistic, we said, "it could be a reaction from the day she had...no food, swallowing blood, crying for hours." To be safe, we got towels and a bowl. 30 minutes later she puked again. She threw up every 20-30 minutes from 7 pm until midnight.

Chad and I took turns laying on the floor with her sad, limp, pale body while the other one packed. It was miserable. Finally at midnight she stopped. I went to bed and hardly slept...Chad slept with her...and hardly slept. And my alarm went off at 3 am.

At 4 am I gave Syd a quick wash down in the tub....got their clothes on and packed them in the car for the airport. We showed up, exhausted, spent and worried. We were going with two couples and 4 additional kids. As we greeted them in the morning, all I could get out was "Syd has the flu...throwing up all night) as my eyes filled with tears. There was nothing I could do but I felt terrible (and emotionally and physically exhausted)!

But we went....Syd just wanted water...she was done puking but wanted no food and she slept most of the flight and took a 4.5 hour nap upon our arrival. I prayed all night she wouldn't be puking on the plane so I'm thankful God answered that prayer!

So....our first ER trip...and Syd's first really bad flu...all in the same day before vacation. Sigh....it was a very very long day.

This year we were going to be in Florida for Easter....so we thought we'd do a little Easter basket hunt with the kids the week before. Gavin was SO excited and loved the hunt. He had to "help" Sydney find hers...look at hers...open hers...use hers...you know how it goes.

Lisa's 30th!

Miss Lisa Thomson rang in her 30th birthday this year and as a surprise her hubby planned an entire day for her of pampering, friends and family. He enlisted me for a little help and some hostess duties....so, all the ladies arrived at my house midmorning at which point we started massages, manis, pedis and some serious culinary indulgences. It was such a great day! We topped the night off with dinner out with some of our favorite couples at Wildfire. Amazing. Huge shout out to our hubbys who wrangled the kids all day so we could enjoy a little R&R in honor of Lisa! Happy 30th Lisa--so happy to celebrate your 30 years of life and my hope is to have 30+ more with you in my corner.

16 mo. vs. 3.5 years

So I try to stay on top of getting my kids pictures taken professionally--not always sure why since we have tons of great candid shots on our own, I'm always a month behind and let's face it, the kids are never easy. But...I did it again. These were supposed to be Syd's 15 month shots....and I figured I'd do Gavin at 3 1/2. Well here is what I can say about these two ages:

1- Gavin finally gets it. He turned on the most brilliant of smiles, poses and charm. He was trying to engage Syd to help her smile and seriously was a champ. So, 3.5 years....that's when it gets a big easier.

2- Sydney, oh Sydney. Her age is awful. Terrible. Brutal. No smiles, no sitting, no amusement whatsoever in the process. Instead, she spent the whole time running, screaming, pulling her hair clip out, lifting her dress over her head and touching things she shouldn't. The only time I got her to really smile was when she was hiding in the corner.

Five Little Fishies

Gavin had his very first school play this week and it was down right adorable!! The teachers sent home a CD with a song for the kids to learn so we've been practicing the song Five Little Fishies over and over again...we'd blast the song on the house speakers and dance around doing the motions...even Sydney. Honestly, such a new experience for us---a school performance! Is it super nerdy to say I was SO excited and proud of him (because I was brimming with both)?! He was pretty excited and proud himself too!

Since Gavin started at Kids Can Do, they have mentioned getting him an OT evaluation. I was hesitant to do this but finally after getting our bearings and our schedule consistent, we did get the eval. What she said actualy surprised us....

Her opinion was that he really only needed minor sensory treatment (which is what everyone thought he needed an eval for) but really needed to focus on his core and fine motor strength. He is overcompensating with his body in order to not use his arms, hands, fingers and core which aren't as strong.

So....here it begins, adding more therapy to the mix. At the same time, although we felt Gavin was "thriving" at school and definitely improving, we also recognize the kid needs more so we decided we wanted to start sending him to school 3 days a week. There goes our schedule.

We were able to make some adjustments and he now attends OT for an hour on Tuesdays followed by and hour of speech and we switched his Thurs speech to Wed morning and he goes to school late that day. So far, its worked pretty well and we're grateful that the therapists and school continue to work with us.

We had this eval in Feb I believe, so now we are about two months in....He still loves school and both his therapists (he took to Miss Nikki right away). We continue to see slooooooww progress. Nikki is hoping OT is only a 6 month thing....but then recommended possibly PT. Sigh.

We are focusing on Gavin's self helps skills right now--in particular dressing himself. It takes all my power not to just do it for him each time he laboriously tries to put on each item....but the smile when he does it is worth the wait.

So....more therapy...but we're getting there. :)

15 Months....Belated

Here's just a quick 15 Month update since I'm "behind."

Sydney weighs 29 lb and 12 oz. and is 33 1/2 inches tall. She's still way off the charts and according to my dr, the size of an average 36 month old. That's my Syd.

She is a spitfire and a ham all at the same time. Just as quick as she loves to give a big goofy "CHEESE" for the camera and she will throw herself on the ground rolling and dramatically kicking in a temper tantrum....then, stop, checking to make sure you are still watching. She is my drama queen and knows what she wants.

She loves "ga-ga" (Gavin) and usually calls him upon waking. Speaking of sleeping, she's getting a pretty regular 30 min cat nap in the am and a full 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. Although on occasion, she has been boycotting the cat nap.

The words keep coming and I love to hear her sweet little voice---its almost comical, this sweet little voice out of her robust little body.

She loves to give kisses and hugs, blow kisses, dance (like a crazy woman), play with her babies, her strollers, her babies and her babies. She is baby crazy--such a girl. She still shadows Gavin and yells "GaGa!" around the house. She loves to run...she loves to be independent...she loves to pull bows out of her hair.

She's lovingly referred to as Sydney, Syd, Sydney Bean, Syd Bean, Bean, munchkin, moose, peanut, babes, honey bunny, buns, babygirl and NeNe (by Gavin).

Just love her.

We were so excited when Nate and Christa and the girls decided to come for a visit! Gavin was waiting alllllll week for their arrival and when they finally came he was not disappointed. We packed in so much fun over the weekend. They seriously love being together and we love to watch them interact. Even Sydney thinks she should get in on all the action. While they were here we hit up some favorite spots: the Frankfort Children's Museum, Alsip Nursery and Choo-Choo Johnnys. So fun to have them stay here and wish we lived closer!

Our annual "winter trip" to Florida this year was in February. We went to Fort Lauderdale for a few days and then drove across to Naples for a few days where Chad met up with us for the weekend. Per usual, the kids loved being in the pool and spending time with their cousin, aunt and uncle and especially their Grandmas & Grandpas. Gavin in particular had quite a special weekend with Gram Dody and was often found being her "helper" watering the flowers and playing endless games of pretend with her. Love to see them together. We had a great time and feel so lucky to have spent time with Grandmas & Grandpas! Here are the snapshots of our trip (and since I'm behing on blogging....uncaptioned!):

When the Thomsons were in the hospital getting aquainted with their new guy, we were lucky enough to watch Lauris for a whole day. Gavin was SO excited about the anticipated day of fun and to watch the kids play all day was a blast. I even got 2 hours of quiet time when they all slept (even though there was a slight communication breakdown between Lauris and I over her "covers" at nap). It was a great day...and one Gavin talked about all weekend.

Meeting Dex

On February 15, our good friends celebrated the birth of their second child, and first son, Dexter Zachary Thomson. We were able to go see him and his proud parents in the hospital and enjoyed every minute of snuggling that little man. We look forward to so many years of watching this little guy grow! Later that month, once they'd had time to somewhat acclimate at home, we were able to go see them AND big sister Lauris so all the kids could be introduced to their new playmate. Gavin is still pretty much only obsessed with big sister Lauris, but I'm sure someday his affection for Dex will rival that he has for her. Sydney...now, SHE's the interested party in the "baby." Fun to celebrate their new family of four!

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day goes by in our house without much fanfare and we're all fine with that. However, this year I was able to spend the morning at Gavin's school for his Valentine's Day party. He was SO EXCITED to have Mom there and had to show me his seat, his cubby, all his friends cubbies and pictures and anything else he could find. I love seeing him at school so it was a fun treat for us both. Later that night, per Harris V-Day tradition, we enjoyed a heart shaped pizza with our family.

This year we went back to Grand Bear Lodge in Utica for the third year in a row....but this time we went with my family. We set everything up with Kyle and Heather and then invited my parents along. The kids LOVED it. Gavin was totally in his element and into being Mr. Independent when it came to the slides...there were even tears when we told him he was too little for the big slides. Sydney & Harrison, waterbugs that they are, loved the toddler pool, swimming in the waves and playing with the fountains. Honestly, I feel like our kids were at such a great age this year and really enjoyed themselves.

Blizzard 2011

This past week was declared an actual blizzard! On Tuesday, things started closing down for Wednesday in anticipation....schools, stores, you name it. Chad's work cancelled so on Tuesday night as the snow started coming down, we just hunkered down for our first family snow day. We had record snowfall, accumulating over 2 feet in alot of areas and setting the record as the 3rd largest snowfall in the Chicago. It was cold, and windy and even included thundersnow! On Wednesday, when the snow finally stopped and the skies cleared, we bundled up and headed outside. We could all hardly maneuver in the snow but the kids loved and it was fun to spend a snow day together!

Leonard Love

Yay! We finally successfully had a weekend long visit with the Leonards where no one puked, had a temp, had a cough or had to be quarantined!! That alone makes it a success but beyond that we had SO.MUCH.FUN. We took the kids to the Frankfort Children's Museum, watched them play and laugh and run....while we were able to have pizza, wine and quality adult conversation! We love the Leonards in our house and are so happy they came for the weekend! Can't wait until next time!

J-J-J-Jump Zone

Just recently, my friend Lisa and I saw a Groupon deal for Jump Zone, an indoor kids jumping playground of sorts. This deal was exciting because a) there is one conveniently located right here in Mokena, b) we are always looking for fun things to tire the kids out and c) we love a good coupon deal. Done deal. Purchased. We tried it out for the first time this past Friday. Oh my. Chaos. We needed two sets of eyes on each of us. The combination of both my kids running in different directions at full speed, Lisa being 9 months pregnant, Lauris getting stuck in more than one jumpy contraption, me being the only able bodied one to rescue her and this underlying fear you are going to lose a child somewhere deep in the abyss of larger than life bounce houses was stressful! All in all fun, but next time we're going with our husbands. :)

Last weekend we were all very excited because we had both Harrison AND Remy for an overnight sleepover. Gavin was so excited that when he woke up both of these individuals would still be here. Chad and I were testing out life with 3 kids and a dog....clearly, we were awesome at it.

Let it Snow!!

We finally got a good snow that was going to stick around long enough for me to bundle up the kdis and take them out in it. I think the bundling up part took about as much time as it did for me to get cold enough to head back inside! Actually, Gavin LOVED it! He cried when we had to come inside and was out again later helping Daddy do some shoveling. Syd on the other hand was terrified...then excited...then mesmerized...then cold. She'll get used to it. It was fun to get some cute shots of them outside.

A few "fun facts" about Sydney & Gavin these days:

SYDNEY:

1 - Sydney is actually, LEGITIMATELY thinning out. People that don't know her would never believe that is possible, but the girl's tummy is getting less round and her legs are getting less chubby. She's still a chunk but all that running is trimming her down.

2 - Sydney's been working on her molars now for what feels like a month. I keep getting my fingers in there and feeling these big swollen lumps. About a week after Christmas I felt one cut through (yay!) but the other four a being stinkers. We've had more than a few challenging days.

3 - Syd's making all kinds of noises...that could actually...dare I say...pass for words!?!? She's adding the words up, night-night, cracker and papa to her repertoire. Who's kid is this?

4 - She eats like a haus. Seriously, she can put it away.

GAVIN:

1 - Gavin's in a huge BEAR HUNT phase...he likes to read the book, listen to the music on tv and play bear hunt all over the house with ANYONE that will respond. He likes to be the bear, pretend there is a bear or make you there bear...it doesn't matter.

2 - Gavin loves school and loves therapy. He gets excited every morning about one or the other.

3 - BIG Helper. FAVORITE WORDS. He wants to help me do everything and when I make lunch without him or do another job he likes to do without him, there is often words. How this doesn't equate to picking up toys though, I have yet to figure out.

4 - He's doing SO much better on the potty. We still have accidents. Mostly they are just pee thank goodness but not always. However, he's actually TELLING me sometimes when he has to go which is a huge breakthrough.

5 - As for language...he's trying more and more. We have more words and more accuracy. We are still very very far behind BUT further ahead than we were 6 months ago.

6 - He loves playing pretend. Sometimes I'm Gavin and he's the Mommy and he drives us to school or church or the store. Sometimes he's stuck and injured and we need to rescue him and doctor him up. Sometimes he's a chef creating a multi-course meal. He loves to pretend.

Fish Out of Water

So today before nap, I was giving the kids a bath. When they take a bath together, chaos ALWAYS ensues. This time was no different. Sydney is going through a "stand in the tub" only phase which is particulary annoying and frightening especially with her wiggle worm brother all over the tub ready to take out her legs at any moment. At any rate, as I was about to get Sydney out of the tub, I realized I forgot her towel in my room. I instruct Gavin to be very careful by Sydney and go RUNNING to grab the towel (yes, I'll admit, I've done smarter things than leave my two children unattended in the bathtub). I come running back into the bathroom and this is what I see:

My Prayer Today

Today as I was driving I heard a song on the radio...about a daughter getting married and I started to let me mind go down this path....I prayed...

For Gavin - That God is creating a woman for him that will honor and respect him. A woman who will bring him comfort, who will bring him laughter and will bring him joy. Someone who encourages him, challenges him and delights in him.

For Sydney - That God is creating a man for her that someday will love her beyone measure. A man who will always make her feel beautiful and safe and protected. Someone to listen to her and hug her and make her smile. Someone who truly see her as a treasure. Someone like her Daddy but a perfect fit for her.

I prayed...in earnest today...that God is creating and living within the future wife and husband of my children. And someday, according to God's plan...he'll bring them together.

Puerta Vallarta 2010-2011 Part I

This year's annual Yonker family trip was to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. I was equal parts nervous and excited this year. I knew my kids were at a great age for having fun in the pool, sand etc. However, I also know Sydney is at a TERRIBLE age to travel on a plane (for 4+ hours). Regardless, they did GREAT. Of course we had our travel issues....waking them up in Milwaukee at 3 am, being VERY sleep deprived by the time we got to Mexico and not having a room for 3 1/2 hours aka no ability to nap, boycotting sleep on the return flight (Gavin) and crying the whole two hours home from Wisconsin (Sydney). Overall though, it could have been far worse.

The whole week was a blast. Again, very nervous about this whole 4 people in a room thing--especially at nap but they managed quite well. Granted they survived the whole week in a sleep deprived haze. They were going to bed very late every night and Syd was skipping her morning nap all week. Needless to say at nap time, they crashed hard (usually after Sydney bounced around in her crib for 20 minutes while Gavin shushed her).

Each morning Gavin usually woke up talking about pancakes, waffles, quesadillas and one of his cousins (this trip mostly Margot but also, Sam, Bea, Addie and Charlie. All in all we would have had 34 people this year but unfortunately, Kyle, Heather and Harry could't go due to a funeral and were definitely missed!

Traveling is always a challenge...but the end result is so worth it! (Pictures are in two posts)

Christmas Day

On Christmas Day we broke from our usual tradition since we were leaving later that afternoon. We went to my parents at 9 am and began by having brunch and opening presents. We then had a quick lunch and headed home so we could leave for Milwaukee after naps. Even though our time was cut short, we still had lots of fun and enjoyed giving all our gifts. It's always so fun to finally give what you've (ahem, I've) spent so much time picking out for my family. The kids were spoiled, we were spoiled....and we hope our family feels the same way. Thanks for everything! (Unfortunately, I took very few pictures.)

"Christmas" morning at our house was actually Christmas Eve morning but clearly, our kids are too young to notice. It was such a nice morning hanging with the kids, opening stockings, getting excited about their big Santa present, having breakfast and opening presents together. We're hoping to establish this as a tradition in our family--spending the morning together with the kids enjoying them. They were excited, we were excited and for once--NOT RUSHED!

This year in a rare occurence, Chad had Christmas Eve day off work. So since on Christmas day we'd be rushing over in the morning to my parents, we decided to celebrate Christmas Eve on the EVE of Christmas Eve. Got that? Santa came to our house one night early. As previously mentioned, Gavin is big time into Santa this year. We went through the ritual of putting out cookies and milk and even reindeer food. He was SO excited! After going to bed that night, multiple times he was yelling for Daddy an when Chad would go into his room he kept exclaiming that he heard a "BOOM! BOOM!" and it was Santa coming down the chimney. Chad finally convinced him Santa only comes when you're sleeping.

Persenaire Christmas

We always go to the Persenaire Christmas each year where "Santa" makes a visit. Gavin was SO SO excited this year, I cannot even tell you. He knows who Santa is and he knows what Santa does....and ultimately what that means for him in terms of presents. In fact when his name was called, he actually hammed it up with a large gasp complete with eyes wide and hands covering mouth like "I can NOT believe this is happening!" It was a video moment...which I didn't get on video. :) We've come a long way from Gavin's first Santa encounters but the beauty of having another child is you may get to relive some of those first experiences through another child's eyes. And we did with Sydney...much to the same result.

Spencer Trails & Moppets Christmas

I was able to go to Gavin's preschool Christmas party at Spencer Trails this year. It was so cute. It's so easy to get bummed about the fact he can't be in a Christian preschool where he learns the true meaning of Christmas but it was fun to see him in the environment he loves so much. He was SO excited to show me his friends and everything in his room. Adorable.

So even though he can't be in a Christian preschool right now, he's also been having a lot of fun as part of Moppets this year. At our Christmas brunch, the kids came in and sang a few songs which Gavin loved. All though he couldn't get the words out, it doesn't stop his enthusiasm!
